Metal Dome

A metal dome, also known as a tactile dome, snap dome, or stainless steel dome contact, is a small, precision-formed metallic component that provides tactile feedback and electrical contact in a wide range of electronic input devices.  The metal dome, which is often fitted between a circuit layer (PCB or FPC) and a graphic overlay or membrane sheet, functions as both a switching element and a mechanical spring, producing a characteristic "click" when pressed.  This feedback improves human involvement and assures a consistent actuation signal in small electrical systems.

Metal domes are commonly utilized in membrane switches, remote controls, medical instruments, automotive controls, telecommunications equipment, and industrial control panels when a precise tactile sensation, extended lifespan, and small footprint are required.

Structure & Working Principle of Metal Dome

A conventional metal dome is made of high-quality stainless steel (SUS 301 or SUS 304) and stamped into a convex shape. The dome remains in its original convex state, separating two electrical contacts (open circuit). When squeezed, the dome collapses inward, with the center striking the circuit pad beneath to complete the circuit (closed state). When released, the metal's elasticity returns to its original shape, closing the circuit.
This quick deformation and recovery results in the unmistakable tactile "snap" and audible click associated with tactile keypads. The method provides fast user input while ensuring exact signal triggering without bounce or delay.
